Catuaba is a medicinal plant found in Brazil in the Amazon region that contains an incredible abundance of plant life – more than half of the planet’s vegetation.

The most famous of all Brazilian aphrodisiac plants and is the result of the blend of four main medicinal herbs from the Brazilian Amazon:

  • Catuaba (Trichilla catigua) (28.23%)
  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale) (3.26%)
  • Guarana (Paullinia cupana) (40.31%) and
  • Muirapuama (Ptychopetalum olacoides) (28.23%)

The Catuaba Against Sexual Impotence

Sexual impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction, is the inability and difficulty in having or maintaining an erection of the penis that allows intimate contact.

Thus, man may have a problem when this difficulty occurs in at least 50% of attempts to have sexual contact, and what may happen is that the erection is not rigid enough for penetration.

Affects mostly men between  from the age of 50, and in addition to impairing the sexual and intimate health of the man, can also bring other psychological problems such as depression, thereby contributing to a decrease in quality of life.

Due to its ability to increase Nitric Oxide, catuaba has vasorelaxant effects and may rehabilitating Erectile function.

Is problem can be treated through the use of medicines like Viagra, Cialis or natural products of Catuaba.

Catuaba interferes biologically and mechanically in the health of the man, restoring in a short time its original sexual condition without great collateral effects.

Common Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Use of drugs, alcoholism, obesity, excessive use of certain medications such as antihypertensives, antidepressants and antipsychotics for example.

Psychological problems:

Such as depression, trauma, fear, dissatisfaction or decreased libido, chronic diseases such as kidney failure or diabetes.

The Symptoms of Impotence

The main symptoms of sexual impotence include:

  • Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection
  • Less rigid and flaccid erection
  • Reduction of sexual organ size
  • More time to reach erection
  • Difficulty in maintaining intimate contact in some sexual positions
  • Greater effort and concentration to maintain erection
  • Decrease decrease in the number of spontaneous erections on awakening
  • Ejaculation faster than usual
  • Alterations or deformation in the genital organ
  • Peripheral vascular disease that hinders the passage of blood to the lower limbs of the body such as legs
  • Feet and organ sexual.

How Catuaba interferes in this process:

  • Containing 3 specific alkaloids believed to support libido, including “yohimbe” which seems to be the most active compound that produces a stimulatory effect on the libido of both men and women.
  • These alkaloids are thought to enhance sexual function by stimulating the nervous system.
  • Catuaba stimulates blood flow to the genitals, can strengthen and prolong an erection, enhances sexual excitement and is said to give more powerful orgasms.

The Catuaba may help with arrhythmias.

At the end of this post see article on scientific research on Catuaba to both revert and prevent ventricular fibrillation in the isolated rabbit heart.

The Catuaba Improve Stress and Fatigue

  • Catuaba can act as an adaptogen, thus improving stress and fatigue.
  • It can improve fatigue after exercise by increasing acetylcholine and by improving antioxidant levels.
  • For example, in mice Catuaba could improve fatigue after running on the treadmill and improve grip strength after exercise

The Catuaba has Antioxidant Properties and Anti Aging

Phytochemical compounds identified in the barks of catuaba are:

  • Flavan-3-ols (procyanidin B2, epicatechin, catechin)
  • Flavalignans (cinchonains Ia, Ib, IIa, IIb, catiguanins A and B, apocynin E)
  • Phenylpropanoid derivatives (chlorogenic acid)

These phytochemical compounds are associated with catuaba’s antioxidant activity (stronger than vitamin C and E) and have shown to help prevent cellular damage triggered by oxidative stress in acute and chronic neuropathological conditions.

Catuaba may have anti-aging effects on the skin:

For example, when Catuaba extract was prepared in canola oil, andiroba oil, or buriti oil and applied to the skin, it had improved the permeability of the skin.

Catuaba can also raise the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) in sunscreens and be a promising sunscreen alternative.

The Catuaba Has Antidepressant Effects

#Antidepressant Effects

#Antidepressant Effects

Catuaba is a powerful antidepressant

  • Two ways catuba fights depression is by increasing neurotransmitter levels in the brain (dopamine and serotonin) and by improving regeneration of hippocampal cells (more in section below).
  • For example, catuama was found to be effective in interfering with the synaptosomal uptake of serotonin and dopamine following long-term oral treatment of rats.
  • In rodents subjected to the Forced Swimming Test (FST), catuaba produced antidepressant-like effects and concentration-dependently inhibited the uptake and increased the release of serotonin, and especially of dopamine.
  • Catuaba also increases neurotransmitters is by its ability to (concentration-dependently) reduce the activity of Monoamine Oxidase A (MAO-A).
  • This reduction in MAO-A activity by catuaba has shown to be neuroprotective and neurotrophic (were displayed within the non-toxic range of concentrations).
  • Is Catuaba A Natural Alternative To NSI-189 (For Men Only).

Increases Dopamine

  • By blocking the reuptake of Dopamine, Catuaba can increase dopamine levels in the brain.
  • Although it increases dopamine, Catuaba is reported to not have an amphetamine-like effect (at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg).

Increases Serotonin

  • By blocking the reuptake of Serotonin (5HT), Catuaba can increase serotonin levels in the brain.

Cancer Treatment with Catuaba

The Catuaba does not cure HIV but better the health of the infected patient, strengthening their immune system against other diseases, improving the your general well-being and prolonging their life time.

The Catuaba Improve Brain Function

This is perhaps one of the most well-known Benefits of Cautuba.

Because it balances and strengthens the activities of the nervous system, this plant stimulates memory and also increases focus and concentration.

Catuaba is neuroprotective and reduce brain damage.

For example, Catuaba can reduce oxidative stress (models with H2O2, SNP, and 3-NPA) in the hippocampus and prevent hippocampal cells from improperly dying.

By reducing oxidative stress, Catuaba has potential in several neurodegenerative disorders:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
  • Huntington’s Disease
  • Ischemia-reperfusion
  • Parkinson’s Disease

For example, in models of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion, Cautuba can normalize levels of:

  • Glutathione
  • Oxidized Glutathione
  • Superoxide Dismutase
  • Protein Carbonyl Groups
  • While completely inhibiting microglial astrocyte activation
  • Cautuba can also increase neurogenesis of the hippocampus (described above for depression).

Cautuba has Nootropic Properties:

  • By acting on dopamine
  • Serotonin
  • Acetylcholine
  • Cautuba may have nootropic properties

In Brazilian folk medicine, cautuba is known for its neuroactive potential as memory stimulant.

The antioxidants in cautuba have also shown to improve cognition.

Increases Acetylcholine:

  • Cautuba can increase Acetylcholine levels in the brain and body by reducing Acetylcholinesterase activity.
  • Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that has been receiving a lot of attention in memory research.
  • ACh helps with many functions particularly in the areas of movement, learning & memory, and sleep quality.
  • It is paramount balance ACh properly, so you can perform at your maximum ability.
  • Cautuba improves attention, improves decision-making skills and is involved wit attentional proce. affects the hypothalamus, causing it to tell the pituitary glands to secrete prolactin and growth hormone.

The Cautuba Prevent Alzheimer / Parkinson’s Disease

Due to the action that the Benefits of Cautuba exerts in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease.

Benefits of Cautuba plays a fundamental role in protecting the brain or even alleviating the effects of this disease:

  • Muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors play a role in encoding of new memories
  • Low ACh in the hippocampus has been associated with Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia
  • It’s estimated a 90% loss of ACh in Alzheimer’s patient’s brains
  • Cautuba helps encode new memories and increases the modification of synapses, thus helping enhance memory.

Has Antimicrobial Effects

Catuabines have antibacterial effects against:

  • Bacillus cereus
  • Bacillus subtilis
  • Enterococcus faecalis
  • Escherichia coli
  • Micrococcus luteus
  • Mycobacterium smegmatis

Botanical Description of Cautuba

#Botanical Description

#Botanical Description

Erythroxylum vacciniifolium is the more common Cautuba tree. But other trees such as:

  • Trichilia Catigua
  • Erythroxylum Vacciniifolium
  • Juniperus Brasiliensis
  • Eriotherca Candolleana and
  • Anemopaegma Mirandum are also called Cautuba.

Most effective species:

  • Trichilia catigua
  • Erythroxylum Vacciniifolium

Less effective:

  • Juniperus brasiliensis
  • Eriotherca Candolleana
  • Anemopaegma Mirandum

Trichilia Catigua descrition:

  • Grows to over 8 meters tall is commonly called the big Cautuba tree.
  • Has dark green long leaves, green to red small round clustered fruits and cream-colored flowers.

Erythroxylum Vacciniifolium description:

  • The Erythroxylum vacciniifolium is commonly called the small Cautuba tree by Brazilian gatherers.
  • It can only grow to about 2 to 4 meters in height and has yellow orange flowers bearing dark yellow to orange berry-like inedible fruits.

How to Identify the True Cautuba

Do not get confused with other forms of Cautubas as they can have very different biological effects than Trichilia catigua (real Cautuba).

For example Catuabines A, B, C and D are tropane alkaloids extracted from Erythroxylum vaccinifolium/Cautuba and Erythroxylum coca (cocaine).

Erythroxylum is also native in Brazil, but not a “true” Cautuba, although it has been used in traditional medicine as an aphrodisiac and CNS stimulant.

Other “non-true” Cautubas include:

  • Anemopaegma arvense
  • Eriotheca candolleana
  • Micropholis
  • Phyllanthus nobilis
  • Secondatia floribunda
  • Temnadenia violacea
  • Tetragastris Cautuba

Which Cautuba Should You Be Using?

The Cautuba is beginning to become a popular herbal medicine for a wide range of conditions related to memory, ageing, and sexual health.

But the problem is that there are over seven different, completely unrelated species of plants with the common name Cautuba.

What are the risks involved?

  • This is a huge problem when you consider the fact that the majority of people rely on the common names of plants when recommending, selling, or buying plants for medicinal purposes.
  • Choosing a Cautuba product that has been suggested for one condition, but them buying another species altogether under the same common name can bring a lot of trouble and ineffective products.
  • Not only discredits the place you bought the product, but also herbal medicine in general.
  • To make matters even worse, most of these Cautuba’s are even used in the same way traditionally and are considered to be interchangeable in the traditional Amazonian medical systems where they originate.
  • Is confusing and dangerous because these plants have absolutely no relation to each other, and each one has a totally different chemical makeup.
  • Some of the actions overlap, but many of them are actually completely different and are useful for different conditions altogether.

Cautuba in The Marketplace

Cautuba products purchased today are often simply labelled as “Cautuba” and have no indication of the actual species being used in the preparation.

  • Testing the chemical makeup of herbal products is not yet common in North America.
  • It is which makes it very easy for a company to buy generic “Cautuba” from South American suppliers, make it into a herbal extract, and label it as “Cautuba”, even though the actual species in the bottle might be completely different.
  • Looking at the results of an HPLC test and comparing it to the chemical makeup we knowspecies to have means we can identify when the wrong Cautuba species is being used.
  • Places like Australia are more reliable, because require regular testing of the chemicals within a herbal extract.

Why The Names With Cautuba Are So Confusing

When it comes to common names, there is often confusion because the name tends to be different by different groups of people.

One circle of people will refer to a plant as one thing, which has no relation to the name given to it by another group of people.

That’s why the scientists prefer using the botanical names of plants.

These names not only offer some indication as to what characteristics the plant has, but is also a universal system of naming.

Trichilia Catigua can only refer to one species of plant no matter where you are in the world.

  • It is not indicated for patients suffering from glaucoma or any type of ventricular pre-excitation.
  • If taken during pregnancy, Cautuba may cause offspring to produce higher amounts of antibodies (IgG1 and IgG2a anti-IgY).
  • Doses of of 1000 mg/kg in mice (hydroalcoholic extract of T. catigua from the commercial preparation of Catuama) caused death within 4 h after administration.
  • Although, in humans, chronic administration of 25 ml of Catuama twice daily for 28 days caused no severe adverse reactions or hematologic and biochemical changes.
  • Mice treated with crude extract and ethyl-acetate fraction of T. catigua barks appeared normal and with no adverse effects at doses up to 5000 mg/kg and 3000 mg/kg, respectively.

Scientific Studies on the Aphrodisiac Effects of Cautuba

1. Research of the Institute of French Sexology

Many studies have been carried out around the world, one of them was done by the Institute of Sexology of Paris in the 1980s, where Cautuba it was consumed by the patients who underwent the study.

With constant consumption, over 10 days, the study observed an improvement in the sexual appetite of 65% of the patients involved.

The aphrodisiac effects, however, are not the only actions of Cautuba in our body.

In fact, pharmaceutical companies from the United States and Europe even classify Cautuba as a powerful antibacterial with powerful medicinal effects.

2. Study conducted by the University of São Paulo (USP / Brazil)

The doctor and researcher of the University of São Paulo (USP), João Calixto, who studies a herb variety from Amazon, explains that it has vasodilatory properties and this facilitates erection and reactivates sex hormones due to its antidepressant and analgesic properties .

With long-term effects, in addition to increasing libido, the plant stimulates the central nervous system, is used against insomnia, nervousness and improves memory.

The doctor Calixto coordinates tests to manufacture remedies against depression from the vegetable.

Natural Defibrillator Created From Cautuba

Phytotherapeutic Catuaba origin of Brazilian flora has been used for two decades as an energy source and is capable of reversing cardiac arrhythmia in infarcted patients.

Experiments indicate results that of  in a decade or less will no longer be necessary the use of electric shock in patients victims of myocardial infarction or intoxication.

To combat ventricular fibrillation (can cause death), it will suffice apply of  Cautuba herbal intravenous drug whose effect is immediate.

Innovation will reduce costs for hospitals and make treatment affordable for more people in more places

  • This is great news not only for elderly hypertensive, but especially for young people, who are more likely to have this arrhythmia in cases of stroke.
  • The main advantages of the drug are practicality, since it can be used in any circumstance and place, including in rescue ambulances, and low cost.
  • And this is great because since not all the people prone to infarcts have the resources to acquire an implantable defibrillator (similar to a pacemaker ), and not all hospitals have the electroshock device.
  • It is also likely that such a drug, once used, will inhibit future fibrillation, but research is recent and such a hypothesis has yet to be confirmed.
  • The only certainty so far is that Catuama causes defibrillation.

Patented brand Catuama:

  • To ensure the rights to the effect of this new drug, researchers applied for the patent in Brazil, the United States, the European Union and Japan between June and August this year and are awaiting approval.
  • Discovery was by chance during an experiment conducted by Professor Irineu Tadeu Velasco, Department of Medical Clinic, Medical School of USP, and Vera Pontieri technique.
  • Pharmacologist João Batista Calixto and discovered, that it also had antidepressant effects, since it interfered with uptake and release of some of the neurotransmitters responsible for regulating human behavior.
  • Follow the complete article of this research in the link below.
